Cybersecurity of Networks and Networked Systems

Cybersecurity of Networks and Networked Systems

Overview

During its first decade, the LINCS did not consider cybersecurity as a structuring research theme. The prevailing assump1on was that the security of networks could be addressed in parallel with their design and optimization, without requiring a transversal framework. This separation reflected the prevailing approach at the time. A decade later, this separation no longer holds. The rapid evolution of digital infrastructures, the increasing complexity of distributed systems, and the integra1on of ar1ficial intelligence into networked environments have reshaped the threat landscape. AI systems are now both powerful tools for defense and new vectors of vulnerability, creating new interdependencies between network design, data processing, and security requirements. This evolution is reflected in the growing engagement
of LINCS members in cybersecurity research. Dedicated initiatives have emerged at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, including the organization of a workshop in 2025. Ongoing research on quantum networks raise significant security questions, from quantum-safe cryptography to the security of quantum communication infrastructures. Multiple LINCS seminars throughout 2025 have addressed cybersecurity topics, demonstrating increasing collective interest. These developments confirm that cybersecurity has become a relevant area within LINCS. Despite this growing activity, efforts have so far remained uncoordinated, with no shared scientific roadmap. As a result, opportunities for synergy and strategic positioning remain only partially exploited. In December 2025, during the LINCS seminar, the decision to include cyber- security as a structuring research theme is adopted, with the aim to initiate a  scientific roadmap aligned with the emerging technological challenges able to federate ongoing initiatives and foster collaboration. This may create an opportunity to attract new expertise and reinforce partnerships.
